Hydration and nutrition: our tips for facing the heatwave
Not hungry, not thirsty? While France is going through an episode of heatwave, hydrating and eating is not always easy. Our advice for adapting to the heat.
A heatwave sweeps across the country and the mercury exceeds 30 °. However, excessive temperatures strain the body and lead to additional energy expenditure. It is therefore important to eat and drink, even if the urge is not there. Here are some tips that will make you want to sit down to eat.
1 / Eat fresh!
Adapt your diet and give up cooking in the oven this week: it gives off a lot of heat ... Instead, bet on the freshness of starters, main courses, or desserts.
- Vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini ...) will delight your meals. Raw, they provide you with a good supply of mineral salts and water. Now is the time to innovate without going through the cooking box.
- Summer classics, melon, and watermelon have many advantages: easy to digest, they help to compensate for perspiration and prevent heavy legs.
- Try the cold soups. For example, gazpachos, those cold soups of Spanish origin that are as refreshing as they are rich in vitamins and minerals.

2 / Remember to drink even if you are not thirsty!
In the event of high temperatures, it is advisable to hydrate and regularly drink at least 8 glasses of water per day (800 ml), the idea being for a healthy person a daily consumption of 13 to 14 glasses. ... while eating of course! Because beware of excess! Drinking more than 3 liters of water a day without eating can cause a dangerous decrease in sodium level in the blood. In addition, with renal laziness, it is difficult to eliminate water.
3 / Choose the right drinks
The easiest way is still to drink water, whether it comes from the tap or from a bottle. Decanted tap water quickly loses its chlorine taste in a few minutes and can be consumed within a quarter of an hour.
To brighten up your still water, consider syrups diluted in water or add a few fresh mint leaves: freshness guaranteed!
Avoid alcohol! It promotes dehydration such as sugary drinks (such as soda) or drinks rich in caffeine which have a diuretic effect and can worsen dehydration.
